February might be a short month, but it’s packed with local festivals, Valentine’s Day family fun, cultural performances and so much more.  Get your calendars ready and take a peek at our favorite events popping up around town.

Valentines for Veterans

Runs until Sunday, February 5th.  Wake County Public Libraries

Show your appreciation to local military veterans at any Wake County Public Library.  All ages are encouraged to use the materials at the libraries’ craft table to design Valentine’s Day cards for men & women who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.  Completed cards will be delivered to the Durham Veterans Affairs Medical Center for delivery to Veterans before the holiday.

Little Mermaid performed by the Carolina Ballet

Thursday, February 2nd – Sunday, February 19th.  Fletcher Opera Theatre, Raleigh

Carolina Ballet will take your family under the sea as Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale, “The Little Mermaid”, is brought to life on stage.

LEGO-Palooza 2017

Saturday, February 4th & Sunday, February 5th.  Morehead Planetarium, Chapel Hill

FREE event for families with children ages 6 years & up.  Come explore awe-inspiring and never-before-seen LEGO displays created by the North Carolina LEGO Users Group.

Triangle Russian Festival

Saturday, February 4th.  12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.  Halle Cultural Arts Center, Apex

Come and enjoy Russian culture and experience the unique folk and ethnic heritage. This FREE festival will include Russian and Georgian folk games, dances and workshops for kids and adults.  Enjoy traditional Russian foods and desserts from vendors.  Golden Gates and Moscow Nights Trio will perform.  (Performances cost between $8-$10 to attend.)

Pop-Up Art & Virtual Reality Station

Saturday, February 4th.  Noon.    NC Museum of Art, Raleigh

FREE & open to all ages accompanied by an adult.  Discover a wilder you!  Create a self-portrait that reimagines the great outdoors inspired by Ansel Adams.

Carousel Farms American Bullriders Finals

Friday, February 10th – Saturday, February 11th.  6:00 p.m.  State Fairgrounds, Raleigh

Families can enjoy watching American Bullriders Finals, Bullriding and Barrell Racing Finals. Door open at 6 p.m. & show starts at 7:30 p.m.  Cost:  $12 General Admission. Kids 5 & under are free.

Storytime with Sammy

Come meet Sammy the Squirrel every first Tuesday of the month and enjoy a themed storytime, an activity creating a take-home souvenir and an exploration through the museum.

Nature Peekers: Can You Growl Like a Bear?

From trumpeting like an elephant to howling like a wolf, kids will love discovering different animals and the noises they make in Can You Growl Like a Bear? by John Butler. NC International Auto Expo

From classic cars, new production models to concept cars this 30th annual International Auto Expo are showcasing these automobiles for young & old.  Kids can also enjoy the display of race cars, sheriff & highway patrol cars. 20th Annual Great Backyard Bird Count

Friday, February 17th – Sunday, February 20th.  Wake County Parks (Blue Jay County Park, American Tobacco Trail, Harris Lake County Park, Historic Yates Mill County Park, Crowder District Park & Lake Crabtree County Park) 

Join in this annual, four-day event that encourages bird watchers of every age & skill level to count the birds around us while learning more about each through fun activities.  Wake County Parks have lined programs from bird watching to activities, storytimes, crafts and even a breakfast hike to enjoy The Great Backyard Bird Count.  Click here to see which program your family can jump into.

Youth Art Expo Art Show at The Halle Cultural Arts Center

Marbles Superhero Power Party

Family Winter Walk

A play for ages 5 years – 105 years!  Raleigh Little Theatre’s youth troupe performs this exciting story of Cher Ami, a pigeon who saved American soldiers during WWI by carrying a message for help.
